Recent studies have shown that both vented and non-vented chest seals can provide immediate improvement on the respiratory function of
the patient. However, only vented chests prevented the development of life-threatening conditions after simulated airway leakage,
while all non-vented chest seals allowed for the development of a tension pneumothorax.2
If a tension pneumothorax is developing, current protocols and guidelines suggest a treatment plan of chest decompression with needle thoracostomy. In the environment of use, there is a potential
for care providers to fail to notice the signs and symptoms of a tension pneumothorax in a casualty who has previously had an open pneumothorax treated with a non-vented chest seal.
Therefore, the recent TCCC Guidelines state that penetrating chest trauma and open pneumothorax should be managed with a vented chest seal when possible.3
The HyFin® Vent chest seal was recently re- designed to better serve care providers. The updated one-way vent design features three channels that allow for better air and blood evacuation and decrease the chance for clogging or failure. The HyFin® Chest Seals utilize one of the most adhesive hydrogels in existence for superior adherence to the skin in any condition. The packaging of the HyFin® products is the smallest on the market, and features easy- to-identify tear notches. Also, the Twin Pack comes with two chest seals but allows the
care provider to only use one if needed (ie. no exit wound) without sacrificing the other.
