Can a Tourniquet Be Too Tight?

Can a Tourniquet Be Too Tight?

Hey everyone, Doc Miles. I'm going to be talking about tightening a tourniquet. If a tourniquet can be put on too tight, what I want to do is I want to place the strap from the middle out to the outside. And what that's going to do is it's going to help me as I tighten the tourniquet on my casualty, this position is going to allow me.

To pull away from my casualty, get it nice and snug. What I'm going to do is I'm going to check to make sure I've got it tight enough. So I'm going to take three fingers. I'm going to try to get underneath the tourniquet. Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to start tightening the tourniquet. First thing I'm going to look for is did bleeding stop. I've got no bleeding.

Now I know I've got it on tight enough. So what happens if I keep going too tight? on this a couple of things can happen one is You can get a failure, which is really hard to do because this windlass is very strong, but number two is it can apply so much pressure that you really start doing damage to the nerve.

What we want to do is we want to go tight enough to stop bleeding, stop the pulse, and then we want to stop there. So at this point, I'll go ahead and secure the windlass, I'll mark what time it is, and I'll monitor my casualty.
