Many first responders are concerned about edge weapons and how to protect themselves. While there are some stab-rated vests, they offer little protection against firearms. Body armor rated for firearms, while providing some stab protection, are not designed to specifically stop stab threats. While edge weapons are obviously a concern, the data is clear that firearms are the biggest threat that we face.
Additionally, a stab-rated vest could fail if the knife tip is sharper or if the force of the attacker is greater than what's used in the NIJ stab test. There are combination packages that cover ballistic and stab threats, but those packages come with increased weight, bulk, and cost. Because of these factors, the majority of packages are designed for ballistic threats.
Remember, the goal is to provide protection against the most common threats that we face in a lightweight and comfortable package that you can wear every day.
