Hey everyone, doc Miles at North American Rescue. Today I'm going to go over some quick uses of pre-hospital ultrasound and how this may help you in treating your patients outside the hospital.
Cardiac Check
So the first one that we'll talk about is how to do a cardiac activity check. A lot of agencies and people are using this for CPR to do cardiac activity.
Take a look, see if they have PEA, see if they have asystole, and help guide their resuscitation effort.
So here I've got the Butterfly IQ 3 plugged into my iPhone. So all we do, first step, just plug it in. We're going to give it about two to three seconds as it connects the probe. I'm going to click on presets. I'm going to go to Cardiac. Select. Get my lube. I'm going to go subxiphoid. And take a look as we go. Angle up, and now I've got a good view of cardiac activity, and I've done that in about 10 seconds.
Carotid Pulse Check
Another way to use this to help guide resuscitative efforts is to use this for a carotid pulse check. So a lot of people find it quite a bit easier to use ultrasound. We can even use Color Doppler in it to see if we're getting flow through the carotids, which is a great marker of effective CPR.
What we're going to do is go back to presets. We're going to scan down, and we just put vascular carotid, select that, place it over the carotid, and then we're going to get a nice view of that carotid expanding with each pulse or with each compression.
