Hey everyone, doc Miles at North American Rescue, and today I'm going over some good uses of ultrasound in the prehospital setting.
Vascular Access
So let's talk about vascular access. This is one of the great things that you can do with ultrasound. I'm using the Butterfly IQ 3 plugged into my iPhone here. First thing I'm going to do is go to presets and make sure I'm on vascular access. I'm going to select that, and as you can see, if I place it over a vessel. Right there. I've got it over that vein, and you can see that dark circle. And then the other thing that you can do is gently press down on it, and you'll see that vein easily compresses. So now I know I'm right over a vein and I've got a transverse view of it.

What I can also do is go to the action buttons and push biplane, and what this lets me do is look at it in two separate planes. So on the top one you see that blood vessel longitudinal. So as the needle enters, you'll see it actually enter that vessel and slide up. And then the other one in the lower screen shows the transverse. And so basically we're taking a cross section of that blood vessel.
I know I'm right lined up right in the middle of it, and then I see that vessel lengthwise. So I can actually look at two planes as I'm doing vascular access.
